Apartment with Beguiling Bird’s Eye View of the River Blackwater

Easily accessible, “The Riverbank” apartment is the perfect holiday location for a couple seeking peace and quiet in the Irish countryside. It sits on a riverside lane that sees almost no traffic – a handful of cars a day (including the postman!). The salmon jump, and its not unusual to see otters frolicking. The country walks include one of your own, a twenty-minute stroll around the property with stunning views over the Blackwater River. Across the river sits a historic castle with its tower folly.

The apartment is comprised of three rooms – a sunny conservatory, a combined kitchen and living area, and a small double bedroom with ensuite shower and toilet facilities.

The most exceptional part of a stay at “The Riverbank'”, though, is your private access to a cozy wooden hut, which we call the “Hooch”, perched high on the bank of the river. The Hooch is comfortably furnished, with book-lined shelves, games, a small fridge and coffee/tea making facilities. Whole days can be whiled away – even rainy ones – watching the ever-changing life of the river through its enormous picture windows. The wrap around balcony is the perfect place for a sun-downer on a warm night.

Those who want a complete break from life’s hustle and bustle may choose to spend their entire holiday ensconced in the Hooch with a book, or sitting on its sunny balcony watching the salmon jump. For those who want to venture out a bit more, there is plenty on offer in this unspoilt corner of Ireland. The beautiful seaside village of Ardmore is 20 minutes drive, as is the historic town of Lismore - with its magnificent castle, cathedral and heritage center. Youghal - 20 minutes by car - has one of the longest and most beautiful strands in Europe. Dungarvan, 25 minutes by car, is the starting point for the wonderful Waterford Greenway walking and cycling path. Fabulous food is within easy reach. The Tannery in Dungarvan, The Cliff House Hotel with its Michelin-starred restaurant, Richmond House in Cappoquin offer unique takes on Irish cuisine, but all strive to source locally. For those interested in hiking, the Blackwater Valley offers some of Ireland's most unspoilt walking terrain - from the seashore to the hills of the Knockmealdown and Comeragh mountains. Or take on our own pilgrim's path, St. Declan's Way - that links the ancient ecclesiastical centres of Cashel, Co. Tipperary with the Waterford coastal village of Ardmore. The path passes through our nearest village, Aglish, about 4 km. from The Riverbank. Kayaks and canoes can be rented at Blackwater Kayaks in Villierstown (2km). Sailing in Dungarvan, and an adventure center at Ardmore, are within a half an hour's drive. A little further away, there is fantastic surfing at Tramore.
The Riverbank apartment and Hooch are adjacent to our own home – we call it “Still Point”. More than any other quality, it is tranquillity that The Riverbank at Dromore offers its guests – in TS Eliot’s words at “the still point of the turning world, there the dance is.”
