Rock Cottage is a charming and spacious traditional Irish self-catering cottage set within the grounds of a former Georgian hunting lodge dating back to 1826, on a private 17-acre country estate on the Mizen Peninsula in West Cork.

Surrounded by gardens, paddocks and heather-covered hills, the cottage enjoys a peaceful rural setting with walking trails and elevated viewpoints overlooking Dunmanus Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The location is ideal for guests wishing to explore the Wild Atlantic Way, with Schull, Durrus and Goleen all within easy driving distance, along with some of West Cork’s most beautiful beaches.

The cottage has been thoughtfully restored to retain its historic character while offering modern comfort throughout. Accommodation includes a well-equipped modern kitchen, a separate living and dining room with a traditional open fireplace for cosy evenings, and a large shower room on the ground floor. Upstairs is a bright, open-plan bedroom with a king-size bed and a single bed, making the cottage suitable for 2–3 guests.

Rock Cottage is dog friendly and particularly popular with walkers, cyclists and nature lovers. Guests are welcome to explore the estate, enjoy the open space, and relax in the various seating areas dotted throughout the grounds. The resident animals, including donkeys, ponies, sheep, chickens, ducks, dogs and cats; add to the relaxed country atmosphere and are a favourite with animal lovers.

The vibrant village of Schull, just 10 minutes away, offers boutique shops, cafés, restaurants, pubs, sailing, and a popular Sunday market. The wider area is renowned for excellent food, music and film festivals, island ferries, historic sites and outdoor activities including walking, swimming, kayaking, surfing, sailing, golf and horse riding.

Rock Cottage can be booked on its own or in combination with The Stables and The Garden Chalet, making it ideal for couples, small families or groups who would like to holiday together while enjoying their own private space.

Rock Cottage is perfectly located on the Mizen Peninsula, one of West Cork’s most scenic and unspoilt regions, and directly along the Wild Atlantic Way. Guests can enjoy beautiful coastal and countryside walking routes from the property, with quiet boreens, hill walks and sea-view trails nearby, while more challenging hikes and cycling routes are easily accessed across the peninsula. Just a short drive away are golden beaches and sheltered coves, ideal for swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding, as well as boat trips and island ferries to nearby islands. The lively harbour village of Schull, only 10 minutes away, offers excellent restaurants, cafés, traditional pubs, boutique shops, sailing, and a popular Sunday market. Nearby Durrus and Goleen provide local food producers, cafés and access to some of West Cork’s best coastal scenery. Highlights of the area include Mizen Head, historic sites, dramatic cliffs, scenic drives, and some of Ireland’s most memorable sunset viewpoints. Throughout the year, West Cork hosts food, music and film festivals, making Rock Cottage an ideal base for exploring the culture, landscape and outdoor life of this unique part of Ireland.
Guests particularly love the peace, space and sense of privacy at Rock Cottage, along with its beautiful setting on a 17-acre country estate with countryside and sea views. The cottage is often praised for being comfortable, warm and well equipped, combining traditional character with modern conveniences, and for the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere created by the gardens and resident animals. Rock Cottage is a wonderful place to stay year round. Spring and summer are ideal for walking, cycling, beach visits and exploring the Wild Atlantic Way, while autumn and winter offer a quieter, more atmospheric escape. These seasons are perfect for scenic drives, dramatic coastal landscapes and cosy evenings by the open fire. Jonathan and Jacqueline have been welcoming guests to Rock Cottage for over 11 years, and the property consistently receives five star reviews across major booking platforms, reflecting the care, experience and attention given to every stay. Sustainability and respect for the natural environment are an important part of life at Rock Cottage. The estate uses solar panels to heat hot water, natural drinking water from its own wells, and log fires fuelled by wood from fallen trees on the land. An electric vehicle charging point is available for guests. The grounds are managed to encourage biodiversity, with wild garden areas, hedgerows, woodland and beehives, and no use of chemicals or pesticides. Composting and recycling are actively practised, and guests will often see organically fed chickens and ducks, homegrown vegetables, and a wide variety of wildlife including hares, rabbits, wild birds and bees. This approach helps preserve the peaceful, unspoilt character of the estate and enhances the overall guest experience.
